- 1 Thessalonians</ii>z <ii>Thessalonians<ii> <ii>Tbbski The King James Version (KJV), also known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible that originated in the Church of England in the early 17th century. Completed in 1611, this translation was the third to be officially approved by the English Church authorities, following the Great Bible and the Bishops' Bible. The King James Version was borne out of a conference called by King James I in 1604, known as the Hampton Court Conference. In this conference, a new English version of the Bible was proposed to address perceived issues with previous translations, particularly as raised by the Puritans. Under the direction of King James, 47 scholars from the Church of England were tasked with producing this new translation. They worked diligently to ensure that the final version adhered to the ecclesiology and reflected the episcopal structure of the Church of England, as well as the belief in an ordained clergy. The translation itself was a collaborative effort, with the New Testament being translated from Greek and the Old Testament from Hebrew texts. Additionally, the Apocrypha was translated from Greek and Latin sources. The Authorized Version eventually replaced the Great Bible in the Book of Common Prayer (1662) for Epistle and Gospel readings, officially authorized by Act of Parliament. By the 18th century, the Authorized Version had become the standard English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches, surpassing even the Latin Vulgate in popularity among English-speaking scholars. The edition most commonly used today, known simply as the King James Version, closely follows the standard text of 1769 that was edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford.
